Carol Schram: Asking prices are high as the Vancouver Canucks look to land a UFA centre Looking to shore up their lineup by adding a centre in free agency, the Vancouver Canucks appear to have bowed out of the Tyler Bozak negotations. Players like Riley Nash, Tobias Rieder and Jay Beagle could still be in the mix.

For the love of god don't go after Bozak.
He is soooooooooooo sheltered, and his defense isnt great.
Everything from here on out with Bozak would be downhill.

You could get Derek Ryan for half the price and half the term who also happens to be younger.

Thanks Carol! Relieved that the Canucks are bowing out on Bozak. It has been said many times that a team's biggest mistake are made on July 1. Hoping we add a couple of inexpensive pieces and save the cap space for when we need it for extensions.

Sounds like #Hawks renewed efforts to move Marian Hossa’s contract in last few days. Hossa, 39, has three years remaining at $5.25 million in one of those back-diving deals and league proved his medical condition worthy of LTIR exception this season.

LTIR and only owed $3 million dollars.

Doesn't leave Van with too much cap space after getting Lucic and Speeza as well.

Does anyone know if the cap jumped based on the revenue of Vegas expansion fees, or if the league revenue actually rose aside from expansion.
Just curious, because we may need to be careful what we wish for on acquiring cap dumps if the cap were to be reduced, due to a false market increase.

The expansion fee was not included in Hockey-Related Revenue, so that's not a factor. But Vegas's success definitely was. I wrote about this for Forbes last month:

it should be actual, with a little bump for the CAD dollar being higher on average this season vs. last season.

vegas expansion fees were excluded from cap calculations.

Yeah, but you will be sending us Eriksson when we give you Lucic, so it's all good.

thing about vegas is they also brought in about $70M of additional salary. So they would have needed about $140M of revenue just to have no impact on the cap.

maybe with their season they drove some growth, by not much. You need $62M of additional revenue (above $140) just to get a $1M increase in the cap.

i think it's fixed increases in national tv deals and a small bump from the canadian dollar that drove growth.

Is pretty much Sutter. Not sure why you love this guy so much, doesn't produce unless he has a lot of skill around him. Bit of a net hound, but nothing to write home about.

The cap number is based on revenues, not costs, so Vegas' salaries don't factor in at all. But the ticket sales that they drove at their own arena - and elsewhere, as one of the biggest draws in the league - certainly do. So does merch.

National TV deal rates were the same last season as they've been for the last few years in both Canada and the US (Rogers/NBC). Regional deals go directly to the regional teams.

I think there are other drivers as well - sponsorship deals and other things behind the scenes that we don't see. I know it took awhile for them to finish the accounting from the World Cup from 2016, so that may even have factored in.

Noooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We can't let Vancouver get the Bozek. Hey Toronto....the Kings will trade you Doughty for his negotiation rights....never mind that he'll be a free agent on Sunday and the open negotiation period has started already.

vegas does factor in when you divide revenues by 31 instead of 30.

yeah, no new national tv deals. by i'm pretty sure they are structured with fees increasing each year, not flat.
